Over nine percent of Indian citizens belong to tribal communities, among them the Rathwa tribe, who live in the forests of the Vadodara region within the state of Gujarat. Though often dismissed as socio-economically undeveloped, the Rathwa have complex visual and performing arts traditions that are passionately practiced in accordance with their faith, a deep belief in their god Pithoro Baba. Pithoro Wall Paintings are vast works covering the main wall of their homes, but their purpose is not to be decorative; they are painted as part of an elaborate ritual and equally reflect imagination, a deep cultural knowledge, techniques of drawing and materials, as well as the tradition of passing from generation to generation.
Guest Curator Sandhya Gajjar’s presentation covers the reasons why these paintings are made, the artists who make them, and the interesting contemporary feel they express.
