This event will take place online through Zoom. Prior to the event, registrants will receive a link and password via email, as well as additional instructions if necessary.

In this two-session workshop, students will build foundational skills and techniques to support the development of concepts and styles. Students will examine contemporary artists such as Richard Mayhew and Yayoi Kusama and discuss the basics of composition, color theory, perspective, texture, value, and tone. Working through drawings and watercolor techniques, students will learn to bring art concepts into a cohesive body of their own work. At the end of the workshop, students will participate in a group discussion to present their final piece. 

This online course will be broken into two sessions:

  • Thursday, November 5, 4-5:30pm
  • Thursday, November 12, 4-5:30pm

About the instructor, Katie Simpson:

Katie Simpson is an artist and arts educator from Santa Cruz, who holds an MFA in Studio Art from the City College of New York and a BA in Drawing, Painting and Printmaking from Portland State University. She has taught art to people from kindergarten through college and is excited to continue to teach art techniques and theories to as many people as she can. Simpson’s own art focuses on nature and the natural environment, and she mixes drawing, painting, and print techniques to explore these ideas.
