Nene Humphrey’s Circling the Center is an ongoing multidisciplinary project exploring the neuroscience of emotions through video, sound and live performance. This iteration presented at Montalvo features the premier of a choral piece Everything that happens, created by Humphrey’s collaborator Roberto C. Lange and performed by the Cantabile Youth Singers of Silicon Valley under the artistic direction of Elena Sharkova.

Everything that happens is based on a transcribed conversation with neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux about the synaptic events in the brain and uses a simple system employing word syllables, vowels, and breathing patterns. It is performed without a traditional score through written and vocal instruction. Video and text projections will weave in and out of the choral presentation.

A Q & A with the artists will follow the performance.

Text for Everything that happens choral work:

“Everything that happens to us and gets recorded in our brains and stored is transcribed in a way by synaptic eventsThe physical pattern that you would see thru the microscope is a very crude approximation of what goes on in real time because each of those synaptic connections can participate in a wide variety of different kinds of behavior, and it’s the particular pattern of synaptic connections in any one situation that is specific to that situation so you wouldn’t necessarily see the regularity of it because the regularity comes not so much from a rigid structure but from the flexible use of the synapses in that structure” - Dr. Joseph LeDoux 2011

This event is organized in association with Flourish: Artists Explore Wellbeing, a multi-disciplinary program about health and happiness initiated by the Lucas Artists Program at Montalvo Arts Center.

“My own brain is to me the most unaccountable of machinery - always buzzing, humming, soaring roaring diving, and then buried in mud. And why? What's this passion for?” - Virginia Woolf
