Come take a deeper look at how and where light has been used as a form of creative expression across cultures and history! Deepavali, popularly known as Diwali, is one of the most widely observed festivals in the Desi community. Known as “the festival of lights,” it is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains as well as the Newar Buddhists from Nepal. Even though these diverse peoples observe Diwali with different customs, its symbolic significance is universal: the victory of righteousness over evil, with lamps signifying the defeat of darkness.

In this presentation, Dr. Niranjani Patel and members of the Chinmaya Mission South San Jose Study group will give historic, philosophical, and regional perspectives on Diwali, exploring how artistic practices associate with the festival express some of the core ideas within Hindu scriptures. Attendees can discover meaningful connections and stories around light within the context of the Bruce Munro at Montalvo: Stories in Light exhibit. The evening will culminate with a demonstration of Rangoli painting and a lamp-lighting ceremony.
