"Love is a friendship, set to music." —Joseph Campbell

Celebrate the closing of L O V E with a party in the Carriage House Theatre and Project Space Gallery!

Musical sensations Bouquet, Nite Jewel, and Sonny Smith share their broad interpretations of LOVE through word and song in a multimedia musical evening featuring performers and musicians from the Bay Area and Los Angeles. This child-friendly evening also features a participatory art-making workshop for kids led by Montalvo’s education department.  Kids are invited to come up with alternative symbols for the word “love,” traditionally represented by a heart; their designs will be transformed into buttons that participants can take home with them!

Bouquet is a kaleidoscopic pop duo from California consisting of Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs and Max Foreman.  The two set out to create a uniquely inviting, immersive sound, intoning delicate vocal harmonies to a rising, ghostlike mass of guitar, trembling synthesizer, and pulsations of early rhythm machines.  Lyrics alternate between painterly portraits out of time and devastatingly simple pop tenacity to delightful effect.  Bouquet's music echoes undefinable post-punk wonders Young Marble Giants and This Mortal Coil, synth heroes Cluster, and the dulcet sensibilities of Sibylle Baier and Sandy Denny.  Live shows incorporate elements of installation, objects and videos that further envelop the listener.

Nite Jewel is the performing moniker of Ramona Gonzalez. She is a composer, songwriter, and multimedia artist from Los Angeles, California. She has released two critically acclaimed albums and three EPs, collaborated with such notable artists as Dam-Funk and Bay Area rapper Droop-E, and composed a song for Grand Theft Auto V. Currently Nite Jewel is finishing a score for an experimental film as well as her third album.

Sonny Smith began playing Jimmy Yancey covers on piano in little mountain town clubs of Colorado when he was 18. These piano gigs led him to Denver and then into Central America where he busked up and down the Telemanca Coast with a couple friends in a band. At this time he was working on screenplays that ultimately broke apart into long-winded songs with characters, dialogues and plots. In 2005, Watchword Literary Magazine commissioned Sonny to produce One Act Plays, a series of songs written in theater play format, but sung. With guest musicians ranging from Neko Case, Miranda July, Jolie Holland to John Dwyer of the Oh Sees. Following this was the release of Fruitvale, on a tiny imprint. A loose song cycle about a neighborhood in Oakland where he lived. In 2000, he wrote and directed his first short movie Kid Gus Man. In 2009 he released Tomorrow is Alright (soft abuse/secret seven) with his band Sonny & The Sunsets, a loose collective of bay area musicians. After multiple tours and various collaborative/solo releases, Sonny and the Sunsets released their 2nd full-length, Hit After Hit, via Fat Possum on April 12, 2011. This was followed by 3 more albums, the last from 2014 entitled Talent Night at the Ashram , is a series of songs based on short films Smith wrote but has not completed.

Organized by visual artist and musician Carolyn Pennypacker Riggs, this event is presented in conjunction with the closing of the exhibition L O V E on view at the Project Space Gallery February 28 through June 8, 2014. Join us after the concert as the party continues in the Project Space Gallery and Pavilion with cash bar, tacos and music.

This event is organized in association with Flourish: Artists Explore Wellbeing, Montalvo’s latest multiyear programming theme, organized by the Lucas Artists Residency Program.
