VENUE: Japanese American Museum of San Jose

RELATED EXHIBITION: Rolling Counterpoint

Visitors are invited to drop in and share tea and their stories about belonging, exclusion and social division with artist Taro Hattori while his mobile teahouse is stationed at the Japanese American Museum of San Jose (JAMsj).

This  event is organized in association with Audrey Edna Butcher Civil Liberties Education Initiative of the California History Center at De Anza College and coincides with  JAMsj’s rotating exhibit Sharing Stories: an Oral History. The exhibit and related programming takes as a point of departure the San Jose Japanese American community’s commemoration of the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which authorized the mass forced removal and incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. Participants are invited to explore shared histories of scapegoating and social exclusion in the South Bay. Dialogue will be encouraged between Japanese Americans and Muslim Americans as well as others from the South Bay’s diverse communities concerned with creating safe spaces and building new alliances in light of heightened attacks on immigrant communities, as well as threats of mass deportation and registries for Muslim Americans.

Rolling Counterpoint will be open from February 16-18, 12-4pm; February 19, 12-3pm
