Classes for the Artist In Your Life

Classes Make Great Gifts

It’s proven science that experiences give people greater satisfaction than objects. So, if you're looking for a gift to give to the artist in your life, consider an inspiring arts experience at Montalvo. We proudly offer classes in a variety of genres:

Wheel Form Ceramics
Learn how to create simple and complex ceramic forms, working on Montalvo’s pottery wheels and in our charming Creekside Studio space. Enjoy six weekly instructional sessions with ceramics professional Sue Kang, plus additional Wednesday studio time to hone your craft. Choose from daytime classes (January 9-February 13) or evening classes (April 17-May 22) -- or both!

Ikebana
A centuries-old art form, ikebana is the Japanese art of floral arrangement. It is said to calm the spirit, focus the mind, and teach the eye to identify beauty in the details of the natural world. This spring, we are offering new arranging approaches with Mindful Ikebana (February 4), Ikebana Everlasting #1 (March 11), and Ikebana Everlasting #2 (April 8).

Dance
Practice different styles of dance in the intimate setting of the historic Villa. These classes are perfect for anyone at any skill level. Sign up as an individual, a couple, or a group. Learn Israeli Folk Dance (February 7), Afro-Caribbean Dance (March 7), and Hawaiian Dance and Art (April 4).

Contemporary Drawing & Painting
In this modern twist on classic techniques pioneered by famous artists, you can experiment with collaging, cutting, painting, and more -- all taught by professional artist Dana Harel. Classes include Photo Transfer Collage: Louise Nevelson (March 5), Drawing with Scissors: Matisse Cutouts (March 12), and Experimental Watercolor: Georgia O'Keeffe (March 19).

Spark the "Lovalution" with Aquarius

Open Access

Join us next Friday, December 15 at 8pm, when musician/visual artist Jennifer Johns will present Aquarius (an excerpt from a work-in-progress called Ayo and the Aquarian Mind). This audio-visual experience features a fusion of the sounds and sights from around the world and galaxies. In the piece, Johns weaves Afro beat and house music with soul, poetry, and captivating visuals to take us on a journey into Aquarius, a time next to now. In this place we can see clearly our human condition; we are healed and inspired to spark the "lovalution." To learn more about Johns--and to download music from this project for free in advance of the performance--visit jenniferjohnsmusic.com/music.

Arrive at 7pm and enjoy a reception in Montalvo's Project Space with a no-host bar and participatory art activity.
