Arts In Your Classroom Conference March 3

Arts in Your Classroom 2018

We are proud to announce our 16th annual Arts In Your Classroom conference on Saturday, March 3 from 9am-4pm. This integrated learning symposium is for artists, educators, administrators, and members of the community interested in better understanding where arts and creative practice can enhance their professional and/or personal development.

The theme for this year's conference is Bridging the Gap: Transforming Perceptions of Division. Explore how the arts can help build tangible connections and cultivate empathy in an increasingly disparate and divisive world. Specific workshop topics engage with questions relating to the dualities of self/other, teacher/student, school/community, art/academics, technology/analog, and more.

Our 2018 keynote speaker will be Jeff Chang, Executive Director of the Institute for Diversity in the Arts at Stanford University and award-winning author.

To see full descriptions of the five workshops, visit our website here. You will be able to sign up for two workshops (one morning and one afternoon). Continuing Education Credits are also available for educators who attend.

Celebrate the Year of the Dog at a Biscuit Social

Biscuit Social at Montalvo

In honor of Lunar New Year, you are invited to join us on Saturday, February 17 from 1-3pm as we host our first-ever Biscuit Social, celebrating both the Year of the Dog and all of our dog-owning Montalvo friends!

Tasty treats for both four-legged and two-legged guests will be served -- including water for dogs; cider, hot chocolate, coffee, and juice for people; and biscuits for both! Together, we will raise a glass (or a bowl) honoring those of the canine persuasion. Local vendors will be in attendance to showcase their dog-specific wares, and attendees will have plenty of time for socializing and romping on the beautiful Garden Terrace.

Tickets are only $5 (free for Montalvo donors; email Chris Wilcox to RSVP). Be sure to invite your fellow dog moms and dads via our Facebook event page. We hope to see you and your pup there!

Cherry Poppin' Daddies Return February 8

Cherry Poppin' Daddies

The Carriage House Theatre will be poppin' on Thursday, February 8 at 7:30pm when the Cherry Poppin' Daddies bring their signature swing/jazz/rock sound to Montalvo with their Zoot Suit Riot 20th Anniversary Show.

The New York Times has hailed the Daddies as “one of the few neo-swing bands that can win over a skeptic with their rhythm section." It's hard to believe that it was was more than 20 years ago that the band burst onto the national scene, but their music is just as infectious today as it was in 1997. Plus, their show is guaranteed to have you dancing in the aisles. Get your tickets today before they're gone!

Shilpi Somaya Gowda Talks Family, Culture

Shilpi Somaya Gowda

Join us on Wednesday, January 31 at 11:30am as Shilpi Somaya Gowda discusses her recent book The Golden Son and her 2010 bestseller Secret Daughter in a literary luncheon moderated by author Katherine Maxfield.

Gowda was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. She has served on the Advisory Board of the Children's Defense Fund, and is a Patron of Childhaven International, the organization for which she volunteered in India. The Associated Press describes her prose as "so achingly touching, it draws the reader in with every description and emotion of the characters."

Her newest book The Golden Son is the story of childhood friends attempting to balance the expectations of their culture and families with their own desires, inspired by the tradition of resolving disputes among families in some rural Indian communities. It was a USA Today bestseller, chosen as the Target Book Club Pick in 2016, and hit #1 on the Canadian Fiction bestseller list in both of Canada's national newspapers.

A delicious lunch paired with wine is included in your ticket purchase. Books will be available for sale.
