Summer Camps for Teens

Do you have a creative teenager in your household? If so, we've got just the thing to inspire them this summer: for the first time, we are offering a series of Classes for Teens as part of our 2018 Summer Camps program! These week-long courses are designed for ages 13-17 and are taught by professional artists and educators.

In Visual Art: Painting Oil On Canvas (June 11-15, 1-4pm), students will receive a complete introduction to oil painting, starting with building and priming their own canvases, and finishing with curating and hanging a group show. With these new skills, students will develop the confidence to continue their painting practice independently.

Fashion Design and Collection Development (June 25-29, 9am-4pm) gives aspiring clothing designers a chance to create new pieces, transform existing outfits into something new, and put everything together into their own collection. The week will culminate with a runway display and a showcase of their sketches, fabric designs, and inspirations!

In Public Art: A Collective Installation (July 16-20, 9am-4pm), students will collaborate with an established local artist to produce an installation on Montalvo’s grounds. The finished work will be unveiled to the public at our annual Art on the Grounds festival on July 20, where students will interact with the public and speak about their piece.

Get that music career off the ground with a crash course in the fundamentals of Music Production (July 30-August 3, 1-4pm)! Using instruments, traditional techniques, and modern digital software, students will compose, record, mix, and edit their own original compositions.

Our diverse Carriage House Theatre Concert Series continues in May with performances by two rising stars: experience guitar playing like you've never heard it before, and catch a young pop star who's making waves on YouTube.

Guitar phenom Shaun Hopper (Thursday, May 10 at 7:30pm) is said to be "Blowing minds and dropping jaws everywhere" (Creative Loafing Magazine). The acoustic "fingerstyle" guitar wizard is both a southern gentleman and a prodigious talent! Merging complex melodic, harmony, and bass lines, along with his one-of-a-kind percussive technique, he mesmerizes everyone within earshot. His live performances are not to be missed!

Spaces are filling up at the can't-miss literary luncheon in our intimate, historic Villa with author/journalist Joyce Maynard on Wednesday, May 2 at 11:30am! Maynard will chat with author and moderator Katherine Maxfield about her remarkable life and the inspiration behind her newest memoir The Best of Us

Maynard has been a published journalist since age 15. Throughout her career, she has been a reporter for The New York Times, a syndicated columnist, and a regular contributor to NPR. She has written several novels, including her first memoir At Home in the World, which details her love affair with the author J.D. Salinger; To Die For, which became a critically-acclaimed movie starring Nicole Kidman; and others. The Best of Us tells of a whirlwind romance and a marriage cut short by tragedy -- it is a life-affirming reflection on love and the experience of loss.

A delicious lunch paired with wine is included in your ticket purchase, and books will be available for sale. Reserve your space soon!
