Our Montalvo Writers Series is a great way to get deep insights into the creative process, expand your appreciation of your favorite books, and mingle with fellow lovers of the literary arts. Join us in the coming months for these unique and enlightening conversations with leading writers as they present new work and discuss their craft and inspirations.

Tuesday, November 22, 7pm: Sandow Birk in conversation with Lori Wood. Artist Sandow Birk's most recent project was nine years in the making: a hand transcription of the Qur'an, illustrated with relevant scenes from contemporary American life, entitled American Qur'an. The book has been hailed as a masterpiece by The Atlantic, The Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Huffington Post, and more.

Thursday, December 1, 7:30pm: Jesse Harris with Petra Haden, concert & conversation with Katherine Maxfield. Harris has been recording music for more than 20 years, and he received a Grammy Award for penning Norah Jones’s breakout hit “Don’t Know Why.” He will discuss the creative process that fuels the songwriter's craft. A musical performance with vocalist Petra Haden will follow.

Wednesday, January 25, 11:30am: Literary Luncheon - Karen Joy Fowler in conversation with Katherine Maxfield. Fowler, the award-winning author of The Jane Austen Book Club, has been a favorite of critics from the beginning of her career. Over a delicious lunch with wine, she will discuss her latest work, the best-selling novel We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves.

Tuesday, April 18, 11:30am: Literary Luncheon - Lalita Tademy in conversation with Katherine MaxfieldThe novels of New York Times bestselling author Lalita Tademy have been translated into 11 languages and assigned as required reading for Stanford University freshmen. Over lunch, she will discuss the challenges and rewards of writing historical fiction.

Contemporary Floral Design Classes
 
 
Contemporary Floral Design Classes
 
 

Beginning in January, join us for Contemporary Floral Design - a series of classes that uses the principles of ikebana to refine and extend traditional European floral traditions.

In a relaxed and fun environment, you will learn to approach the art form much like a painter does a painting: creating highlights, depth, and adding visual interest by varying sizes, shapes, and colors. The courses, taught by Mickie Anderson and Diane Graham, can be taken independently or as a series. All skill levels are welcome!

Your $75 enrollment fee includes all flowers, a vase, and structural materials as needed. Here's the schedule

Sunday, January 8, 10:30am: The BasicsDive into the basics. This class will cover: color and texture; proportion and balance; line and form.

Sunday, February 12, 10:30am: Leaf Manipulation. There's a lot you can do with leaves! Discover how to fold, twirl, and bend them to form unique design elements.
   
  •  
Sunday, March 19, 10:30am: Line and RepetitionLearn how to use these principles to extend arrangements in space, creating beautiful, voluminous decorations.
   
  •  
Sunday, April 9, 10:30am: Structure. Master the use of structural elements to add bold interest and daring height to your designs.

This leading lady of contemporary jazz and so-called "Queen of the American Songbook" has shared the stage with numerous luminaries throughout here career—including B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, and Dizzie Gillespie. Acclaimed for her vocal versatility and incredible 3-1/2 octave range, Schuur sings and swings with heartfelt intensity.
