OneBeat returns
this October

OneBeat

We are excited to announce that we'll be bringing a whole new group of international musicians to Montalvo this October for a 2-week residency followed by a culminating performance festival. Mark your calendars for Sunday, October 25, from 2-6pm, to see OneBeatbecause this is an event you won't want to miss!

The boundary-breaking fellows of OneBeat come from 17 different countries and territories—including the U.S., Russia, Zimbabwe, Egypt, Venezuela, and more. Each has a compelling story, and they range from experimental producers to deeply-rooted traditional virtuosi to indie-rockers to acrobat/activists.

This year’s roster includes Ng Chor Guan, a sound designer, composer, and environmentalist from Kuala Lampur, Malaysia; Jorge Peña, a producer on the forefront of Cuba’s experimental electronic music scene; Dragana Tomić, a vocalist and ethnomusicologist from Belgrade, Serbia; Vieux Cissokho, a Senegalese Griot musician specializing in the kora; and Katherine Suavita Niño, a circus performer and accordionist from Bogotá, Colombia, who works with communities affected by violence. And that's just a few of them!

The festival on October 25 is free to the public, and will feature individual and group performances throughout the afternoon and all around our scenic grounds. There will also be food trucks, beer & wine, and a variety of interactive musical activities.

If you came to see last year's OneBeat festival, you know how amazing this day is. So join our Facebook event and invite your friends! You can also learn more about the performers and follow the OneBeat journey by visiting 1beat.org.

Karen Finley's
Shock Treatment

Karen Finley, "Shock Treatment"

Join us as one of America's most provocative and polarizing performance artists, Karen Finley, appears at a special Open Access event on Wednesday, September 16, at 7pm.

Finley was a key player in the tumultuous culture wars of the early '90s, when public funding for the arts was under attack. Her debut book Shock Treatment—denounced by some as "obscene and indecent"—continues to shatter taboos and challenge readers. 25 years after its first publication, the book has been reissued in expanded format by City Lights publishers.

Join Finley and Lucas Artists Residency Director Kelly Sicat in a reading from Shock Treatment and a reflection on her long career as a feminist artist.

Tickets are $10 for the public and free for members. Beer, wine, and snacks will be available for purchase.

Recommended for mature audiences only.
