Tonight: It's an art party!
Final Fridays celebrates
"The Bells of Mindfulness"

What are you doing tonight? We hope you'll be at Montalvo for our free monthly art bash, Final Fridays! This month, we're celebrating the opening of artist Tiffany Singh's new work, The Bells of Mindfulness. It's an interactive piece that you will definitely want to experience.

The evening begins at 6pm at the Villa with four great food trucks: Madd Mex Cantina, MoBowl, Siva Indian Food, and dessert from Kona Ice. There will also be beer & wine for purchase, live music, and an art sale, while docents offer tours of all of the Art on the Grounds.

At 7pm, Singh will introduce her work with a Q&A and a short film produced by the San Jose State Film Production Society. She will then lead guests to the Italianate Garden, where the bells hang from a persimmon tree.

The Bells of Mindfulness is more than just a beautiful installation: it's a participatory activity. Visitors are asked to listen closely to the bells and choose one to take away with them with the intention of bringing it to what they consider a "sacred space." The next step is to take a photo or video/audio recording of the bell in its new home and email it to us with its location. If you ever happen across another bell out in the world, you may take it and move it to a new sacred space.

Follow the journey of the bells in their sacred spaces by going to this interactive Flickr map. As documentation of their journeys continues, a complex portrait of what "sacred space" means to us will begin to emerge.

Singh has posted some gorgeous photographs of the work both on her blog and on Instagram. We hope to see you here!

Sing, Dance, Play!
Summer camp gets kids moving
through Afro-Latin culture

Afro Cuban Dancing

If your child likes to sing, dance, or beat a drum, it's time to channel that energy into a fun Summer Camp! Kilele: Traditional Afro-Latin Singing, Dancing, and Drumming (August 5-9) teaches students aged 9 & up about the rhythms, sounds, and songs of Latin culture and how they've been influenced by African music.

Students will have a chance to drum some Afro-Cuban and Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms and sing call-and-response style songs. They will also learn traditional dance steps to accompany the music. The camp concludes with a performance on Friday (August 9) at 11:30am.

Saratoga native Vienna Teng
Aims for the stars

Vienna Teng

Singer-songwriter Vienna Teng grew up right here in Montalvo's home town of Saratoga, California. So we are excited to welcome her back home as part of our outstanding Carriage House Theatre Concert Series on Saturday, November 23, at 7:30pm!

Teng's new album, Aims, is slated for a September release, so expect some new songs in addition to your favorite hits. It's her fifth studio album, and represents something of a departure from the pop-piano sound she has established in previous albums: growing and experimenting with new styles and deeper material. Take a listen to an exclusive 3-song preview offered by USA Today here. CDs will be for sale at the show.

Teng is known for her stellar live performances, and this is sure to be no different. Tickets are already selling quickly, so pick yours up today! Purchase online anytime or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.

Will you be there? RSVP and invite your friends on our Facebook Event Page.
