Biological necessity. Source of comfort. Creative medium. Ethical decision. Food is all of these things and more.

Food is a deeply personal thing: The ritual of cooking and sharing meals helps to bring us together as people, as families, and as communities. The food we eat also involves making choices about our own bodies and health. But decisions regarding how food is grown, which foods we buy, and how we prepare what we eat also have far-reaching cultural, environmental, and political implications, affecting our society and our planet.

From October 18 - February 9Mountains in My Spoon, the newest exhibition in Montalvo's Project Space Gallery, examines the impact food has on all of our lives with an installation that includes sculpture, photography, and video.

The unique culinary program at the Lucas Artists Residency has seen a wide range of creative and talented chefs cooking and experimenting with food. This exhibition brings many of those chefs back to showcase their culinary work in a gallery show and a series of events (see below) that invite the community to see, smell, and taste their art!

Featured artists include: Andrea Blum, Sita Bhaumik, Susanne Cockrell, Dignicraft, Niki Ford & Margeaux Walter, Kitty Greenwald & Grahame Weinbren, and Jessica Theroux.

Opening Reception

Friday, October 18, 6-9:30pm

Be among the first to view the exhibition, and enjoy an evening of lively readings and a panel discussion entitled "Eat. Think. Dream." led by the founder of spoonwiz.com, Andrew Pham. Panelists include authors and restaurant critics from around the Bay Area. Artist Sita Bhaumik will serve chai and light bites.

A Seat at the Table:
Artists, Food, and Community
Wednesday, October 23, 1:30pm, at San Jose Stage


Part of the Alliance of Artist Communities 2013 conference, this breakout session brings together artists, chefs, curators, and residency directors to discuss the role of food in contemporary art-making. Speakers include artist Sita Bhaumik; Donna Conwell and Kelly Sicat from Montalvo's Lucas Artists Residency Program; Sharon Maidenberg, Executive Director at Headlands Center for the Arts; Mónica Ramírez-Montagut, Associate Director and Senior Curator at MACLA; and chef, author, and former Montalvo Culinary Fellow Jessica Theroux.

Brilliant Soil & Mexican PotteryThe Exquisite Table pottery workshop
& screening of Brilliant Soil
Sunday, November 10 • Workshop 1-4pm • Film 5-7pm

The Exquisite Table: Learn how to make traditional Mexican pottery! Join Herlinda Morales, a master artisan who creates intricate glazed ceramics with her family in the small village of Santa Fe de La Laguna, Lake Patzcuaro, Michoacan. You will make your own tableware, incorporating Herlinda’s signature design, the "whimsical butterfly." This workshop is open to all ages and levels of experience. Registration: $40; Members: $30.

 

At 5pm, join us in the Carriage House Theatre for a FREE screening of the award-winning documentary Tierra Brilliante (Brilliant Soil). The film explores the public health and environmental risks associated with the production and use of Mexican lead-glazed tableware. A Q&A follows.

 
 

Savoring the RemainsSavoring the Remains: Dinner in the Villa
Saturday, November 16, 7pm

A shocking amount of food in the U.S. is discarded each year. Explore what we do with foods deemed imperfect at a special dinner in the historic Villa. How can creative hands repurpose that which would otherwise be wasted? Can our expectations change in order to make the most of what we have? 

Join us at the table for a meal made of commercially nonviable foods gleaned from the groceries and farmers markets throughout the Bay Area. Chefs will explore the culinary possibilities of these foods, which are still full of life and sustenance. The evening will also feature a video projection and a discussion with chef Jessie Washburn & guests.

 

 
 

Body as EcosystemBody as Ecosystem: Making Healthy Babies
A Food & Fertility Workshop
Saturday, January 18, 11am-2pm

Designed for anyone interested in food and fertility, this workshop will teach nutrition and cooking for optimal fertility and the nourishment of healthy babies in utero. Beginning with pre-conception and continuing through pregnancy, learn about key foods and nutrients that help make healthy moms and babies. Part lecture, part interactive workshop, and a little cooking, this class is useful for both women and men! Taught by former Culinary Fellow Jessica Theroux, author of Cooking with Italian Grandmothers.
