Know What We Did This Summer?

Summer at Montalvo is Awesome!

We sure have had a busy summer at Montalvo -- from camps to classes to concerts, plus our arts festival Now Hear This! and our commissioned work Rolling Counterpoint, not to mention Summer Luncheons, Starry, Starry Night, and everything in between.

Fall brings even more amazing programs, like our Carriage House Concerts, professional development opportunities, and more arts practice classes. Michael Krasny of KQED's Forum will stop by the Villa, internationally renowned dancer and activist Mallika Sarabhai will perform with her troupe and host a dinner party, and a new, original theatrical performance called Mother Lear (which you can learn more about below) will debut.

As a non-profit organization, we rely on your support to continue offering each and every one of these programs. If you're already a member, we are grateful for your generosity. If not, we encourage you join! Memberships start at $100 for a year (which is less than $9 per month!)
and include all kinds of great benefits and exclusive invitations.

Click the button below to join right now, or call our Membership Concierge Chris Wilcox at 408-961-5849 during business hours. Thanks for a fabulous summer, and we'll see you in the seasons ahead!

Make Some Noise on August 25

Open Access

Join us in the Italianate Garden on Friday, August 25 from 6-8pm for a fun and interactive Open Access event: Sound-Making with Taraneh Hemami and Hugh Livingston. It will be a family-friendly introduction to the the two artists' sonic works commissioned for Montalvo’s latest outdoor exhibition, Now Hear This! An Exercise in Listening.

Throughout the evening, Livingston will invite visitors to explore the principles of bird communication by recording sounds and inventing their own bird songs. These new songs will be added to his sonic menagerie, Birds of Invention: A Garden Opera.

In addition, Hemami will invite visitors -- as well as some special guests -- to activate her sound sculpture One Voice (Yek Seda). Poet Monica de la Torre and composer Hans Tammen -- both Lucas Artist Fellows -- will also participate in the evening's events.

Don't miss this fun, casual, and creative evening in a beautiful outdoor setting at Montalvo. Tickets are just $10 (free for Montalvo members!) -- purchase yours today through the button below, or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858, Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm.

Meet Mother Lear this October

Mother Lear

This fall, experience Mother Lear -- a new two-woman performance presented by We Players (the theatre troupe that brought Romeo & Juliet to our grounds last year). The production will be staged outdoors on our scenic Great Lawn.

Mother Lear tells the story of a formerly brilliant Shakespeare scholar descending into dementia. As her memories and her words desert her, she finds her one reliable method for communication is through the remembered text of King Lear. Together, mother and daughter navigate the struggles of family, aging, and mortality through the humor and poetry of Shakespeare’s writing -- and finally achieve authentic communication.

This one-hour distillation of King Lear created by We Players founder Ava Roy and actress Courtney Walsh is designed to invite conversations about the meaning and experience of death. Audiences will rediscover the magic of the bard’s gift for expression, as two relatable modern characters find that Shakespeare’s words surpass their own in navigating difficult subjects like regret and mortality.

After each performance, join us in the historic Villa where a special guest whose life’s work involves caring for the dying will host a conversation about the production's themes.

Four evening performances of Mother Lear will be offered: from Thursday, October 12 - Sunday, October 15, each at 5:30pm. Click the button below to purchase your tickets today, or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858, Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm.
