Botanica Poetica:
New Work by
Lucas Artist Fellows

Hector Mendoza, "White Wilderness" (2015)

Home to formal gardens, oak and redwood forests, and various exotic plantings, Montalvo's horticultural diversity serves as inspiration for a series of new works created by Lucas Artist Fellows Kija Lucas, Monica Lundy, Hector Dionicio Mendoza, and Fieldworks Collaborative (Trena Noval & Ann Wettrich), entitled Botanica Poetica

Through sculpture, painting, photography, and works on paper, viewers are invited to reflect on the ill-defined boundary between the natural and unnatural, and the intimate entanglement between human history and the landscapes that surround us.

Join us on Friday, September 25, from 6-9pm for a special Open Access event, which will be a unique garden tour along with an opening reception for the new exhibition.

Landscape designer, historian, and writer Wade Graham will lead guests on the tour, presenting his original talk entitled "James Phelan's Montalvo: Wonders and Worries of the Gilded Age." Afterwards, grab some food and a glass of wine while you mingle with the artists at a reception in the Project Space Gallery.

Tickets to Open Access are just $10 (free for Montalvo members); click below to purchase or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.

Botanica Poetica will remain on view through December 13, with free gallery hours Thursday-Sunday, 11am-3pm.

Mindful Ikebana:
The art of Japanese flower arrangement

Mindful Ikebana

Join us on Sunday, September 27, from 2-4pm as instructor Yuko Tiernan teaches the peaceful art of Ikebana—a beautiful and popular Japanese method of flower arranging.

A centuries-old art form, Ikebana calms the spirit, focuses the mind, and teaches the eye to see the myriad details of the natural world. Participants
will learn the foundational practices and philosophies of Ikebana and create a simple arrangement to take home. Those who have taken previous classes will build skills through new designs inspired by fall foliage and the transitioning seasons.

The $45 class fee includes a Kenzan (pin frog), a plastic vase, and flower materials—but please feel free to bring your favorite vase or Kenzan if you have one.

Click below to register today, or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.
