Gotta get down
at Final Friday
Carmina Escobar
 Carmina Escobar

If you're curious about what our amazing artists are working on at the Lucas Artists Residency Program, be sure to join us in the Commons building (located at the first parking lot as you enter Montalvo) this Friday, April 26, at 6pm for our monthly FREE Final Fridays event!

This month, get a rare glimpse inside two of the studios as artists Jim White and Carmina Escobar both open up their spaces to present and perform their latest works.

First, Jim White, a musician and originator of All Tomorrow's Parties who has recorded with performers as diverse as Nick Cave, PJ Harvey, Marianne Faithfull, and Cat Power, will open his studio. Visitors will experience his new collaboration with Eve Sussman and Claudia de Serpa Soares.

Next, proceed to Carmina Escobar's studio. A multimedia artist from Mexico City, she has created a site-specific installation and performance which is sure to surprise and delight!

The artists will be available for questions, and you'll have a great chance to mingle with fellow art lovers over a glass of wine. Be sure to bring shoes you can walk in, as the residency studios are on a steep hill! (Transportation will be made available for those who can't make the hike.)

We hope to see you there!

Visitors will get the unique opportunity to peek inside the Residency Studios, which are located on the beautiful hillside near Montalvo's historic Villa.

The Beat Goes On:
Drumming classes for both adults and kids!

Masankho Banda teaches "African Culture through Drumming and Singing"

Feeling the beat of the rhythm of the night? Then you're in luck: Montalvo is offering several opportunities for both adults and kids to break out their drums and learn how to keep the beat strong!

First, adults and kids are invited to a unique drum gathering on Sunday, May 5, at 3pm: Mindful Drumming for "Mishe" Happiness. "Mishe" is a term describing wellbeing through being mindful of oneself and others. This workshop will help you cultivate happiness by using the rhythm of the drum while connecting with those around you. If you have your own drum, please bring it! Click here to register.

This summer, get the kids in sync with drumming and rhythm camps:

  • June 10-14: Learn about world music and its roots with African Culture through Drumming and Singing. (Ages 6-10)
  • June 17-21: Take part in Rhythm Band, an introduction to a wide variety of fun percussion instruments. (Ages 9 & up)
  • August 5-9: Learn about Kilele, the African-influenced drumming, music, and dance style of many Latin American regions. (Ages 9 & up)

These are just a few of more than 30 unique Summer Arts Camps for kids we will be offering from June-August. Click here to see the full lineup.

We hope you can make the time for these rhythmic lessons, guaranteed to improve your standing at any dance-off you may find yourself in!

No Arts Splash Saturday
But come for a visit anyway!
The Great Lawn with "Rashomon" by Chuck Ginniver. Photo: Bahara Emami.
 Rashomon, by Chuck Ginnever

Due to the timing of our renovation of the Great Lawn, we were forced to postpone our annual Arts Splash Open House & Student Arts Festival, which would have taken place this Saturday, April 27 - and which you may have seen in our program guide from last year. That's the bad news, but there's good news, too!

The good news is that the Great Lawn was finished ahead of schedule and the weather is beautiful, so you can still visit Montalvo this Saturday for all sorts of other reasons!

Take in the Art on the Grounds, starting with Chuck Ginnever's Rashomon, a series of interrelated sculptures strewn about the Great Lawn. Enjoy the lusty Edible Dress Tent, the birdhouses of Control Tower, and see if you can find Nest. The Project Space Gallery will also be open, featuring our current exhibition Happiness Is... - a meditation on wellbeing. Of course, a stroll through our gardens is always delightful, and don't forget about our miles of hiking trails!

So, why not bring the family and make a day of it? We will even have a food truck, Gold Rush Eatery, on the grounds so that you can grab lunch!

And look for Arts Splash to return in 2014!
