Montalvo favorite Marc Cohn added to schedule January 8

Marc Cohn

As if our 2014-2015 Carriage House Concert Season wasn't already great, we decided to throw in one more Montalvo favorite for your listening pleasure: singer-songwriter Marc Cohn will return on Thursday, January 8, at 7:30pm.

After winning a Grammy for his ballad “Walking in Memphis,” Cohn solidified his place as one of this generation’s most compelling musicians, combining the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. He’s a natural storyteller whose songs often relate romantic, drawn-from-life tales. Rolling Stone says he has "one of rock's most soulful croons."

Montalvo members had early ordering privileges this week, so tickets are already moving quickly (supporting us with your membership means you get this and other great benefits), but tickets are on sale to the public now!

Cohn's previous concerts in the 300-seat Carriage House Theatre have sold out, so if you want to see this great performance, click the button below right away—or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.

Don't forget to check out the rest of the
Carriage House Concert schedule!

Our October shows are coming up fast, with seats disappearing daily for Dave Mason's Traffic Jam (two shows, October 1 and October 2), Keiko Matsui (October 23; nearly 2/3 sold already), and Leon Russell (October 24; fewer than 50 tickets remaining). And there are plenty more great concerts this fall through spring, from Rusted Root to The Manhattan Transfer to Capitol Steps. Literary lunch with
author Alix Christie September 25

Alix Christie

Join us on Thursday, September 25, from 11:30am-1:30pm in the Lucas Artists Residency Commons for an intimate literary lunch with first-time novelist Alix Christie as she presents her new book, Gutenberg's Apprentice.

The novel is an enthralling debut that evokes the birth of printing in medieval Germany—a story of invention, intrigue, and betrayal, told through the lives of the three men who made it possible.

Christie grew up in the Bay Area and is a journalist and letterpress printer who served as an apprentice at her own grandfather's printing press. She currently lives in London, where she reviews books and arts for The Economist.

The author will do a reading, Q&A, and book signing. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Meet the author and enjoy a freshly-made lunch with your choice of sandwich catered by Napkin Ring!

Space is limited, so click below or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.

Montalvo joins Bay Area Now 7 at Yerba Buena; exhibition opens July 18

Leah Rosenberg installing her work, "Finding Your Center"
                               Artist Leah Rosenberg

Since 1997, San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts has mounted a triennial art exhibition titled Bay Area Now (BAN). For this year's BAN7, YBCA has partnered with 15 Bay Area arts organizations—including Montalvo—and each will curate site-specific projects throughout its galleries and campus.

Our contribution is Finding Your Center, an audio tour and sculptural intervention organized by artists Susan O’Malley and Leah Rosenberg. The piece playfully responds to people's seemingly ceaseless quest for balance in modern life. Using color, voice, shape, and sound, and responding to the unique architectural features of the YBCA, the artists will lead visitors through the exhibition spaces in search of an elusive center that is both physical and internal.

Finding Your Center and BAN7 open Friday, July 18, with an Opening Party, and run through Sunday, October 5.

On Thursday, July 24, from 6-8pm, join Lucas Artists Residency Program fellows at the YBCA as we celebrate the exhibition with Come In, We're Open: a soiree featuring performances by composer Tiffany Lin, musician Andres Solis, and Columbian dancer Sandra Gomez. O’Malley and Rosenberg will also host a performance with audience participation.

Mingle, enjoy food and drink, and get to know the artists. Tickets are only $10 at the door. RSVP via Facebook below, and invite your friends!
