Art Heist Brings Artists, Community Together

Maximo Gonzalez had most of his stolen artwork returned

We are pleased to announce after an intense search, members of the Los Banos Police Department have recovered the majority of 268 paintings and drawings of trees that were the work of Argentinian artist and Lucas Artists Fellow Máximo González -- and had been stolen from a truck parked at an inn nearly two weeks ago.

The works portray dead and dying trees from different parts of the world, including the Santa Cruz redwoods and Sequoia National Park. These paintings are part of González’s project The Collector, created to build consciousness about environmental issues such as climate change and the recent California forest fires.

When word went out about the missing art, the community joined the search along with an international group of artists from our residency who traveled to the small town to assist. Garbage truck drivers from Republic Services scoured dumpsters on their weekly rounds and citizens kept an eye out for cardboard boxes that might contain the stolen paintings.

A Los Banos resident first located one of the paintings discarded on a trail and called the police after she saw the media reports of the stolen work. This led to the discovery of many of the other paintings in the same area -- and although most of the works have been found, the search isn't over: 72 paintings are still at large.
Citizens are urged to keep their eyes open for black and white paintings of dead, burnt, and cut-down trees that were packed in brown cardboard boxes, some sealed with colored tape.

To read more about this dramatic art heist and see news reports and interviews relating to the recovery of the works, visit our Open Access blog here.

The recovered paintings will be on view from November 17 through March 30 in a small exhibition. Join us on the 17th at 7pm for an Open Access reception and presentation entitled Into the Woods: Commissioning Artists in a Forest, where you can meet Máximo González and hear his story as well as his proposal for The Collector. Musician Howard Hersh will also present excerpts from his latest composition, while poet Cintia Santana reads work that is incorporated into the recording; and Ghayath Almadhoun will read from his newly published book of poems.

Get Your Hands Dirty: 6-Week Ceramics Class

Ceramics

Join instructor Sue Kang for a weekly, daytime (10am-2pm) Wheel Form Ceramics class each Tuesday from January 9 through February 13, 2018.

You'll learn how to create simple and complex ceramic forms, working on the pottery wheels in our Creekside Studio. Begin with fundamental techniques, move on to crafting and trimming your own tableware, then finish with glazing and firing. A small group size ensures individual guidance, and your enrollment fee includes all necessary materials. In addition to Tuesday instruction, you'll have five Thursdays of optional studio time, during which you can continue to develop your skills. The class instructor will be present at these studio sessions to answer questions and provide feedback.

Kang is a potter from Korea who has been practicing ceramic arts in both the Bay Area and her native country for more than 30 years. She studied at Ehwa University and the University of Delaware, and served as a curator for the National Museum of Korea. Her focus is on functional, yet beautiful pieces that are relevant our everyday life, and her pieces can be seen locally at Sue's Gallery Cafe in Saratoga.
