May 25: Final Fridays with Mamoru Okuno, and Beth Custer Ensemble presents My Grandmother
Join us on Friday, May 25, for two fantastic events featuring artists in residence at the Lucas Artists Residency Program!
At 6pm, visual & sound artist Mamoru Okuno will present his piece "etude for everyday life," along with other examples of his work. Okuno's "etudes" explore the art of the ordinary as he employs objects such as plastic wrap, hangers, ice, and instant noodles to generate a visual and musical experience. Final Fridays is FREE and open to the public!
At 8:30pm in the beautiful outdoor Lilian Fontaine Garden Theatre, the Beth Custer Ensemble will perform a live original score to the silent film, My Grandmother. This 1929 film, by Soviet Georgian director Kote Mikaberidze, is a satirical look at the Soviet state system and uses innovative early film techniques from puppetry to stop motion animation in order to tell its story.
Beth Custer's original score is a quick-paced pastiche of jazz, blues, classical, and folk music. Listen to one of the tracks by visiting our page and clicking on the link below the photo!
Tickets to this fantastic performance are $20 for general admission, $15 for Members, or $8 for students. Click here to purchase online today, or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858 10am-4pm Monday-Friday.

Join us on Wednesday, May 9, at 7pm, as Lucas Artists Residency Design Fellows WOMEN (the creative partnership of designers Scott Barry and Neil Doshi) and Montalvo's Associate Curator Donna Conwell will participate in our final Chit-Chat Club, entitled Undesigning Histories.
This FREE and lively discussion is related to the timeline exhibition O'Great Reverie: Montalvo 1912-2012, which is on view in the Project Space Gallery through May 13. The panel will address challenges they faced while organizing the show and explore greater issues in the world of design today.
The conversation will take place in the Phelan Library in the historic Villa, and will be moderated by David Hisaya Asari, California College of Arts Adjunct Professor of Graphic Design. You can also join the discussion live online via Google+! Just visit our page and look for the Hangout invitation.
