Great Lawn renovation underway
As 2013 began, a long-awaited renovation of our Great Lawn also started, thanks in part to a generous donation from the Hind Foundation.
The renovation will be immediately obvious if you visit the grounds in the coming months: the lawn is currently fenced off and filled with piles of dirt. But once completed, it will be in better condition than ever and ready for another 100 years of picnics and activities!
Changes include new soil and drought-resistant grass, improved irrigation for more efficient water use, underground wiring that will prevent gophers from digging holes, and new steps at the base of the lawn. We have also removed several trees that were ailing; all of the other trees are still standing tall.
Our hiking trails are still open to the public while the renovation is in progress, and there will be no interruption in our calendar of concerts, exhibitions, camps, and classes on the horizon. Expect the new Great Lawn to debut in April!
This project is an exciting step for Montalvo as we move forward into our next 100 years.

New exhibition Happiness Is... launches 2013-14 theme
Today (January 25), we kick off our new arts programming theme Flourish: Artists Explore Wellbeing with an exhibition entitled Happiness is.... Installed in the Project Space Gallery and also making use of Montalvo's 175-acre grounds, the exhibition showcases work by artists Susan O'Malley, Leah Rosenberg, and Christine Wong Yap as they address the question: How do we foster happiness and build a contented life?
Join us tonight for FREE events beginning at 6pm with Final Fridays with Laurie Rubin and Jennifer Taira, followed by an opening reception from 7-9pm, which includes two activities with the artists: a 15-minute silent walk through Montalvo's grounds led by O'Malley, entitled Happiness is WALKING; and a ritual of sharing, pleasure, and community with Rosenberg and some freshly-baked site-specific cookies.
In the gallery, Wong Yap's series of texts sewn from ribbons and installed directly on the gallery wall convey messages encouraging positive mental habits. Rosenberg explores how color, light, and material impact our sense of contentment with her Illuminated Stripe Works. O'Malley has created A Space (For You), where she invites visitors to relax and reflect.
Happiness is... extends outside the gallery, with Wong Yap's Irrational Exuberance Flags. Activating a flagpole in front of the Lucas Artists Residency, these rotating colorful banners represent the spirit of energetic optimism. In addition, artist-guided walks through our forest trails are punctuated by signs offering positive directives and colorful design elements.
Join the conversation about happiness! Submit a photo that conveys what makes you happy along with a "#Happiness is..." caption. Select entries will be posted on our website and social media pages, and a winner will be awarded an original poster signed by Susan OMalley (a $50 value). Share your photos on Instagram or Twitter by tagging @montalvoarts. See official rules.
Happiness Is... will be on view through April 14.
Classic Albums Live presents "Hotel California" February 17
