Spotlight: Henry Threadgill
Henry Threadgill

After dinner this week at the Lucas Artists Program (LAP), our Artist Fellows and their guests visited the studio of Pulitzer Prize winner and jazz great Henry Threadgill. There, Threadgill spoke in his musical cadences about his creative process and told stories from his years as a musician.

Want to learn more about this intimate evening? It's one of many behind-the-scenes moments from the LAP that you can experience on our Open Access Blog. Click the button and start exploring; you'll find studio visits, artist updates, information about our programs and exhibitions, and a whole lot more!

In addition to his residency, Threadgill will also be returning on Tuesday, May 22 at 7:30pm with his new ensemble, the Threadgill-Iyer-Prieto Trio for a performance of new music in our intimate Carriage House Theatre.

Throughout his 40-year career, Threadgill's compositions and recordings have pushed the boundaries of what jazz can be. Whenever he assembles a new group, it's a major event in music. His collaborators Vijay Iyer and Dafnis Prieto are also luminaries in the scene; this is a concert that no jazz fan should miss!

Math Meets Dance in Calculated Movements
Calculated Movements

On Tuesday, March 27 at 6pm, join us for Calculated Movements -- a
fascinating lecture with choreographer and mathematician Karl Schaffer, Ph.D, as he demonstrates the surprising connections between mathematics and dance, illuminating how the artistic mind fuels the analytical mind and vice-versa.

Joined by four dancers performing his mathematical choreography, Schaffer will highlight his ideas with engaging visuals, multimedia, and playful audience interactions.
He will also explore ways the seemingly divergent disciplines of math and dance inspire each other -- even addressing relevant, current topics and socio-political issues.

You will come away with a new understanding of the relationship between art and academics because, no matter your natural inclination, the creative process is the fundamental fuel that drives human achievement.
