Experience 103 Shots at March 31 Open Access

Open Access: Cassils presents "103 Shots"

Join Lucas Artists Program (LAP) Fellow Cassils on Friday, March 31 at 7pm for a special Open Access featuring a screening of their haunting short film 103 Shots.

Made in response to the Orlando shootings at the Pulse Nightclub in September 2016, this examination of human connection consists of a series of couples and friends bursting a balloon between their bodies with the pressure of an embrace. It was filmed in Dolores Park during San Francisco Pride with the help of over 200 volunteers.

Listed by the Huffington Post as “one of ten transgender artists who are changing the landscape of contemporary art,” the film's director Cassils has achieved international recognition for a rigorous engagement with the body as a form of social sculpture.

In addition to the screening, multi-faceted hip-hop artist, actor, poet, and educator Dahlak Brathwaite will discuss his latest projects and perform; LAP Fellow Rebecca Chesney will describe a new project she is developing while in residence; and LAP Fellow Jen Shyu will present her most recent work.

Tickets are just $10 (free for Montalvo members!). Get yours today by clicking below, or call the Box Office at 408-961-5858, Monday-Friday, 10am-4pm. You can also click here to join the event on Facebook and share it with your friends.

Art, Floral, & Ceramics Classes Coming Up

Spring Classes at Montalvo

Our last few spring arts classes for adults are coming up soon, and space is limited! Taught by professional artists and certified instructors, these workshops are a fun way to explore a new art form or improve on one you already know -- all in the beautiful setting of Montalvo.

Spring Art Classes
These Monday evening classes are led by internationally-renowned visual artist and former Lucas Artist Program Fellow Dana Harel. Each class explores a different technique through examples from a well-known artist. No experience necessary; all required art supplies will be provided. Expand your artistic repertoire with Grattage Technique: Paul Klee (March 20) and Photo Transfer: Max Ernst (March 27).

Contemporary Floral Design
Use the principles of ikebana to refine and extend classical European floral design traditions. All skill levels are welcome; your enrollment fee includes all flowers, a vase, and structural materials as needed. Next month's class (April 9) will cover the basics for newcomers and will focus on Structure -- adding volume and interest to your arrangements.

Wheel Form Ceramics
Learn how to create ceramic forms and learn trimming, glazing, and surface design techniques -- all on our new pottery wheels. This class, taking place from May 1-22, includes four Monday evenings of instruction and three Wednesday evenings of optional additional studio time. Fee includes enough clay to create your own pieces, which you can bring home to show off to your friends!
