Wheel Form Ceramics Class Coming in October

Wheel Form Ceramics

Great news for all aspiring potters! Our lovely Creekside Studio space is now equipped with brand new pottery wheels to use for classes. And our first Wheel Form Ceramics class is right around the corner: Mondays, October 3, 10, 17, and 24, from 6-8pm.

Instructor Paola Pafumi studied ceramics in the ASUC studio at UC Berkeley. Her speciality is maiolica (tin-glazed, painted Italian pottery), which she learned under masters of the art form in Faenza and Florence, Italy.

In this weekly workshop, you'll learn a variety of building, trimming, glazing, and surface design techniques. Your enrollment fee ($200) includes not only materials and the four Monday evenings of instruction—but also three additional Wednesday evenings of optional studio time, during which you can continue to explore your developing clay skills. Paola will be present at these studio sessions to answer questions and provide feedback and guidance.

Wine O'Clock: Taste and Learn at Conrado Cellars

Tour & Tasting at Conrado Cellars

Come enjoy an autumnal afternoon of good wine and good company on Saturday, October 15, from 3-5pm as you go behind the scenes for a Tour and Tasting at Conrado Cellars.

Award-winning winemaker Paul Conrado will lead a walking tour of his vineyard and cave, discussing his craft and creative process, as well as what it means to be a “garagista” winery, or to make wine in a home garage. Next, enjoy a guided tasting of Pinot Noir, Cabernet, and Merlot paired with delicious antipasti and hors d’oeuvres prepared by Montalvo Culinary Artist Andrea Blum. At the close of the afternoon, you’ll take home a bottle of Conrado Cellars wine.

Registration is just $65. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes for the walk!

Poetic Images Workshop for Educators October 17

Poetic Images: The Language of Visual Art

Our Professional Development Workshops are a great way for educators to share strategies and research, explore problem-solving and art-making across disciplines. Our first workshop of the fall is Poetic Images: The Language of Visual Art on Monday, October 17, from 4-6pm.

Participants will learn to activate their students’ imaginations by challenging them to create a unique work of art incorporating a series of photos with short poems—pairing verse with vision. The finished pieces will demonstrate the challenge and reward of combining visual art and the written word in unusual and poignant ways.

This engaging workshop will be led by Erica Goss, former Poet Laureate of Los Gatos. Lesson plans and other resources will be provided for use in the classroom and elsewhere. Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core Standards connections will be addressed.
