Dr. Donny George Youkhanna, Former President of the Iraq State Board of Antiquities and Heritage and Director General of the National Museum in Baghdad, garnered international acclaim for his efforts in recovering about half of the 15,000 priceless pieces, some dating back as much as 6,000 years and covering key periods of Mesopotamian civilization, that were looted both from the Museum and from the country’s 12,500 archeological sites. George was forced to leave Iraq when he was sent a letter by a milita group threatening to kidnap and kill his son. He is currently a Visiting Professor of Anthropology at SUNY Stony Brook.
