Kathryn Spence often combines sculptural objects with drawing and installation. A dislocation between nature and our culture of consumerism has been a constant subject in her work.
She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, most recently in solo shows at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, Connecticut; Mills College Art Museum in Oakland; the Johnson Museum at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York; and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City.
Group exhibitions include the 2005 Corcoran Biennial in Washington D.C.; The Israel Museum in Jerusalem; SFMOMA; Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston; the California Biennial in the Orange County Museum; Torch Gallery in Amsterdam; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco; San Jose Museum of Art; and the Oakland Museum of California.
Awards given include an Artadia award, the Eureka Fellowship, the Fleishhacker Foundation award, and an Anonymous Was a Woman award.
Her work is included in collections such as SFMOMA; the de Young Museum; the Oakland Museum of California; the San Jose Museum of Art; the Denver Art Museum, the Birmingham Museum of Art, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.
