This film series relates to one of Montalvo’s themes, censorship and dissent. “Pre-Code” describes films made in a five-year period in film history, 1929 – 1934, when restrictions on movie content varied widely, depending on local laws, mores and public taste. These films tend to be racier, more cynical, more socially critical and more politically strident than films produced after this time.
The rigid enforcement by the Production Code Administration (PCA) beginning in July 1934 introduced film censorship in the US through conceiving series of guidelines to film producers.
