(Back to Art on the Grounds)

Presley Martin's interest is in invasive California species. He has created and installed snail boxes that house snails collected from the grounds, testing their preferences for different colors, forms, and content. These boxes are stacked in a shady location along the creek trail, with several layers of colored paper inside each box. As the snails eat away the layers, they creat what appear to be colorful paintings.

The common snail was introduced to the state of California by Italian immigrants in the late 1800s to provide the delicacy of escargot.
