About
Lopez confronts the overlooked and dismissed through her “dust furry” sculptures—forms that exist at the intersection of the familiar and fantastical. These beings emerge from her fascination with the accumulated detritus of daily life, especially the gentle gatherings of dust that collect in corners and under furniture, typically swept away without consideration.
Her dust furries represent a re-focusing and reclamation of the ignored. They are manifestations of time made tangible—each cluster, protrusion, and gentle curve suggesting the slow, patient accumulation of moments. In Lopez’s hands, what we discard or fail to notice becomes worthy of contemplation and care. Through meticulous hand-building techniques, she transforms typically unwanted debris into objects of desire and curiosity. They are simultaneously static, yet alive with potential energy. The textural qualities of her work—sometimes bristling with hundreds of tiny appendages, sometimes smooth and rounded—invite both visual and tactile engagement.
Lopez’s dust furries are gentle provocations, reminding us that our most profound connections might be discovered if we are willing to engage with the world around us.
