Gail Wight

Gail Wight uses visual art to explore contemporary issues in biology and the history of science and technology, teasing out the ways in which scientific theories, procedures, and conventions shape our interactions with the world around us. Her work takes the form of interactive sculpture, video, print, and performative art, often involving other living organisms. Recent projects have focused on deep time and evolution, attempting to visually manifest biological time and biological forms in both their vast and diminutive scales.

Wight holds an MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute where she was a Javits Fellow, and a BFA from the Studio for Interrelated Media at Massachusetts College of Art. Wight has exhibited her work internationally, including venues such as the Natural History Museum of London, Ars Electronica (Austria), Exit Art (New York), the Seville Biennial of Contemporary Art (Spain), the Physics Room (New Zealand), and Cornerhouse, Manchester. She has worked for a research project on cognition at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the Exploratorium’s Performance Program, and has held residencies at the Rockefeller Foundation in Italy, at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, the San Francisco Center for the Book, the Albuquerque High Performance Computing Center, and Stonehenge, UK. She is currently on the faculty of Stanford University’s Department of Art & Art History.
