Benjamin Cortez is a composer and multi-instrumentalist who explores the complexities of 21st-century life by intertwining mid-20th-century American popular music structures with the spontaneity of improvisation. Having studied with jazz luminaries Lewis Nash and Michael Kocour at Arizona State University, Cortez uses the melodic and harmonic language of jazz as a foundation for his innovative take on the singer-songwriter concept. He is passionate about authentic mid-20th-century sound design, and he draws inspiration from trailblazing production techniques employed by producers such as George Martin, Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, and Quincy Jones. His debut album, In Your Hands (2018), is a fully self-produced collection of original compositions, showcasing a wide range of musical influences—from Motown-inspired 12/8 shuffle grooves to introspective acoustic ballads. Cortez is currently developing his second full-length album.
