Danae Mattes is a visual artist working in Berkeley, California. Her mixed-media floor and wall objects have explored environmental concerns such as the earth’s water cycle and our place within it. She has taught at universities, colleges, and art centers. From 1990-93 she was awarded several grants from the Ministry of Culture (Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany). Between 1995-2001 she had residencies at Taller Huara-Huara (Santiago, Chile), the European Ceramic Work Centre (s’Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands), and the Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris). In 2018 at the Montalvo Arts Center Mattes began working with Hope Mohr Dance and musician / composer Henry Threadgill, extending her studio exploration to include performance, photography, and film. Selected museum collections include the de Young Museum of Art (San Francisco), the Snite Museum of Art (Notre Dame, Indiana), the Crocker Art Museum (Sacramento), and the San Jose Museum of Art (California). Her gallery representation is with Dolby Chadwick in San Francisco. Bay Area art historian Mark Levy wrote of her work: “The sublime landscape elements of the clay paintings give the illusion of endless space and emptiness, form becoming formless, natural light becoming metaphysical light, and so on.” Mattes has an MFA. from California State University Long Beach.
