James Gouldthorpe received his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland and studied painting at the Parson’s School of Design in Paris, France. He received his MFA from Mills College in Oakland, California. For the past twenty three years he has worked in the conservation lab at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Gouldthorpe has always been drawn to narrative and even at its most abstract his work suggests a plot. His painted installations explore the boundaries between literature and visual art filling walls with hundreds of paintings, layered and editing until a compelling narrative begins to form. Besides painting he often works with video, sound, photography, sculpture and performance.

Gouldthorpe has shown his work nationally and internationally at: Prelinger Library, San Francisco, CA (solo), 2020; Fourth Wall Gallery, Oakland, CA, 2019; Analog Gallery, San Francisco, CA, 2019; Terrain Gallery, Spokane, WA (solo) 2019; The Lillian Orlowsky and William Freed Foundation, Grant Recipients Exhibition, Provincetown Art Museum, Provincetown, MA, 2016; Historic Centre of Kalamata, Kalamata, Greece in 2012 and 2013; Contemporary Jewish Museum, San Francisco, California in 2012; and Salt Lake City Art Center, Salt lake City, Utah, 2007-08.
