Jeff Chang’s first book Can’t Stop Won’t Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation, was named one of the best nonfiction books of the last quarter century. His other books include Total Chaos: The Art and Aesthetics of Hip-Hop, Who We Be: A Cultural History of Race in Post-Civil Rights America, and We Gon’ Be Alright: Notes on Race and Resegregation. In May 2019, he and director Bao Nguyen created a four-episode digital series adaptation of the latter for PBS Indie Lens Storycast. His next project is a cultural biography of Bruce Lee called Water Mirror Echo: Bruce Lee and the Making of Asian America. He led the Butterfly Lab for Immigrant Narrative Strategy and was the first Vice President of Narrative, Arts and Culture at Race Forward. A national leader in narrative and cultural strategy, cultural organizing, and advocacy for cultural justice, Chang co-founded CultureStr/ke (now the Center for Cultural Power), ColorLines, and the Webby-nominated May 19th Project. He helped write the Cultural New Deal alongside a number of artists and culture bearers.
