Jessie Washburn is a chef, food educator and poet based in Oakland, CA. As the culinary fellow at Montalvo in 2007 – 2008, Washburn developed a practice of narrative cooking, drawing from Mediterranean food traditions, seasonality, and occasion. She brings this philosophy into the public school setting to inspire students to make their own narrative around food, while learning to embrace their curiosity of the unknown. As a poet, Washburn refers to the physicality and repetition of cooking as she writes about themes of nourishment, deprivation, ritual and drudgery. She is a graduate of Middlebury College and masters student at Vermont College of Fine Arts.
