Born in Seattle, Washington, Marie Watt is a member of the Seneca Nation of Indians with German-Scot ancestry. Watt’s interdisciplinary work draws from history, biography, Haudenosaunee protofeminism, and Indigenous teachings; in it, she explores the intersection of history, community, and storytelling. Watt holds an MFA in Painting and Printmaking from Yale University School of Art. She also earned degrees from the Institute of American Indian Arts and Willamette University, where she was awarded a Doctor Honoris Causa in 2016. Watt serves on the board for VoCA (Voices in Contemporary Art), New York, and on the Native Advisory Committee at the Portland Art Museum, Oregon. She lives and works in Portland, Oregon, and has been represented by Catharine Clark Gallery since 2022. Watt’s work is held in many public collections, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, New York; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Arkansas; Denver Art Museum, Colorado; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, DC; Portland Art Museum, Oregon; Renwick Gallery, Washington DC; Seattle Art Museum, Washington; Tacoma Art Museum, Washington; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Yale University Art Gallery, Connecticut.
