Mufid al-Jaza’iri served as Minister of Culture in Iraq during the initial US invasion. Al-Jaza’iri closed the ancient city of Babylon during his term in order to allow experts to catalog the extent of damage U.S. and Polish troops affected to the site while it was used as a military base (the British Museum released reports during that time that found that troops who used the site as a military base did irreparable harm to one of the world’s foremost historical treasures). Al-Jaza’iri was also in term during the infamous looting of Iraq’s museums and cultural sites.
