Sophia L. Torres is the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Psophonia Dance Company.  She has choreographed over twenty original works under Psophonia and has received awards and recognition for her innovative choreography including the Artist Fellowship Award in Choreography and three Artist Project Awards for arts in education programming from Houston Arts Alliance. Since graduating from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and Southern Methodist University, Ms. Torres has performed with the Houston Grand Opera, the Los Angeles Music Center Opera, Houston Metropolitan Dance Company and Travesty Dance Group. She has worked with international choreographers – Bill T. Jones, Susan Marshall and Stephan Koplowitz.  Ms Torres’ expertise lies in arts in education programming. With over 14 years of experience in this area, she has taught for Texas Institute for Arts in Education and currently partners with Young Audiences of Houston developing, implementing and conducting in-school residency programs and performances for students in Houston and Harris County. In 2008, Ms. Torres reached a milestone with Psophonia Dance Company as they celebrated 10 years presenting exciting contemporary dance and offering quality outreach programs in Houston.  Ms. Torres is currently on faculty at the University of Houston.
