Stephanie Gilliland, West Coast choreographer and solo dance artist, has been working outside mainstream dance since 1977. She is director of the dance company Tongue, and engages in interdisciplinary collaborations with other choreographers, composers, writers, filmmakers and visual artists. Ms. Gilliland has presented her work throughout the United States and abroad, including performances at the Dancing on the Edge Festival in Vancouver, Canada, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland, the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle, Encuentro Binacional De Danza Contemporanea in Mexico, and in numerous Los Angeles venues including Dance Kaleidescope, Summer Nights at the Ford, LACE and Highways. Ms. Gilliland is a two-time recipient of the Lester Horto n Award for Choreographic Achievement and currently teaches at Idyllwild Arts Academy. Stephanie Gilliland was a guest choreographer at Scripps during the springs of 1999 and 2002 creating dances that were highly kinetic, involving partnering, momentum, working in and out of the floor, with duets and trios leaving and re-entering the space.
