Tony May is Emeritus Professor of Art at San José State University taught at San José State (1967—2005). Working in a variety of media, May’s art has often taken the form of site-responsive installations and leans toward the conceptual, the quasi-functional, and the whimsical. He believes in the importance of craftsmanship and hands-on involvement of the artist.  

His art has been shown widely in California including shows at the SFMOMA, San Francisco Art Institute, 80 Langton Street, Capp Street Project, San José Museum of Art. He was the subject of a 40-year retrospective exhibit at the San José Institute of Contemporary Art (2010). He has also exhibited in other parts of the United States, England, France, Japan and Thailand. More recently he has had solo shows at b.sakata garo gallery (Sacramento, California) and at George Adams Gallery (New York City) which continues to represent his work
