Overview

2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency Program (LAP) at Montalvo Arts Center. During the first 20 years, the LAP has served over 1,300 artists, shaping Montalvo’s role as a leading cultural force in the Bay Area—and you’re invited to celebrate with us!

20th Anniversary Celebration

Saturday, May 4
VIP ($150): 5–10pm
General ($25): 7–10pm

This will be an evening filled with art, performances, readings, food, drink, and dancing. Every studio will be open and activated by an LAP alumnus. We will host a silent action to support future fellowships.

We will also announce our first ever recipients of the $40,000 Marcus Commissioning Prize, named for a generous gift from the George and Judy Marcus Family Foundation; and honor the visionary leaders who helped ensure the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency Program would be realized: Sally Lucas, Barry Fernald, and Jennifer DiNapoli.

This event will also be the release party for Hello, Goodbye, Hello, a publication that documents the multifaceted role the Lucas Artists Program has played in the lives of artists who have resided here over the past 20 years. Hello, Goodbye, Hello features the voices of notable artists, curators, and culture workers, including former U.S. poet laureate Juan Felipe Herrera; internationally recognized artists and curators Raqs Media Collective; interdisciplinary artist, dramatist, and Bessie Award recipient Alva Rogers; president/CEO of Artist Communities Alliance Lisa Funderburke; and curator, researcher, and co-editor of Contemporary Artist Residencies Taru Elfving. It represents an important contribution to emerging discourse about the role of artist residency programs in our cultural life and examines how residency spaces can be catalysts for change now and into the future. VIP guests will receive a copy of the book!
