About

Infinity Walk is interdisciplinary artist Terry Berlier’s audacious proposal for a suspended bridge-like structure that intertwines two redwoods on Montalvo’s grounds. This walkable sculpture was not intended for the fainthearted. To get to the platform in the shape of an infinity symbol, visitors would need to climb a ten-foot rope ladder. The work is intended to be a slow meditation on the concept of infinity. The act of traversing the platform becomes a contemplation of what it means to be unbounded or endless, to approach something with no beginning or end.

Berlier’s maquette offers a daring reimagination of Montalvo’s woodlands. The structure allows humans to temporarily inhabit a realm that is usually occupied by birds and squirrels. Drawing from Berlier’s own experience with building tree houses, Infinity Walk captures the sense of wonder from climbing and exploring the natural world from new heights.

Berlier describes the sculpture as both a physical and symbolic bridge. By intertwining the two trees, the work draws attention to the natural systems that are not immediately visible, such as subterranean root systems, fungal networks, and the exchange of nutrients and information between all living things. It frames the trees as part of a living, relational network, rather than singular entities.

Infinity Walk also invites viewers to consider how their own bodies, alongside other species and structures, are deeply interconnected. It proposes a queer ecology grounded in entanglement, where bodies, species, and structures are understood as co-constitutive rather than discrete.
