Miya Masaoka

Masaoka is a classically
trained musician, composer, and installation artist. She has created work for
traditional Japanese instruments, chamber ensembles, symphonic orchestra, mixed
choirs, telematic performances, and designed interactive wearable textiles. She
has composed pieces using spatialization, sonification of data, mapped behavior
of plants, brain activity, and insect movement. The Wire calls
her work, “virtuosic, magnificent… essential.” Awards include the
prestigious Doris Duke Award, the Alpert Award, Wallace Alexander Gerbode
Foundation Award, The Wattis Fellowship, ASCAP, Asian Cultural Council Japan
Fellowship, the MAP Fund, Asian Art Foundation, the Centre for Contemporary Art
at Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, Poland, and Issue Project Room
Residency. She has collaborated and worked with many leading artists
including Pharoah Sanders, Pauline Oliveros, Fred Frith, Christian Wolff, and
Zeena Parkins, among others. She is currently teaching at Columbia University
in the Sound Arts Department, and has been a faculty member of the Milton Avery
MFA Sound/Music Department at Bard College since 2003. In 2016, she was
