About
Peaches are a favorite subject and recurring motif of the artist – usually with a twist. In Lu’s hands, a peach may be studded with seed pods and incense sticks; partial figures; heads; or fingers nails. In every instance, they are the very embodiment of the strange and unexpected, while also being delightfully subversive. What assumptions are being deconstructed by Lu in these works?
Peaches are a common symbol in Chinese culture representing prosperity and longevity. In the United States, peaches are a very southern fruit, and the state fruit of Georgia. As such, a peach can also be perceived as being a very American symbol. Additionally, Lu notes that in popular culture, there is the peach emoji, which has its own gendered or sexual meanings.
Lu favors greens, browns and creams – referencing the Tang Dynasty, a golden age of art, culture, and innovation. The use of san cai (which means “three colors” in Mandarin Chinese) for glazing ceramic works originated in the Tang Dynasty. These hues are often purposely employed by Lu, an artist born in the United States to Taiwanese parents.
Each of these layered meanings are encapsulated in her work, which explores the complexities of the Chinese diasporic identity and cultural authenticity. In a playful and engaging way, Lu addresses her own experiences of immigration, cultural hybridity, and cultural assimilation.
